Ben Shneiderman: Eight Golden Rules
Evidence class: author-published expert synthesis, explicitly requiring domain-specific validation. Read: 2026-09-13. Source: University of Maryland author page. The page presents the sixth-edition formulation, not an immutable list from the 1980s.
Verified guidance
The eight concerns are consistency, universal usability, informative responses, a recognizable end to an interaction, preventing mistakes, reversal where possible, user control, and reduced memory burden. In the sixth edition, rule 2 is universal usability, broader than the older rule about shortcuts for frequent users.
Website application
Use the framework to inspect a transaction from entry to confirmed result. Preserve valid form entries during correction. Support both occasional users and practiced users. Treat reversal as conditional on the operation, not a promise that external consequences vanish.
Tension and limits
The memory discussion favors keeping long forms on one display. That recommendation can conflict with task-based staging. Compare the real dependency between fields rather than follow either layout rule blindly. The author's seven-plus-or-minus-two wording is not a seven-item navigation specification. These are expert heuristics, not measured performance guarantees.
