Deep research a topic and make the results reusable
Give one research question an organization of its own. Let your agent dig for hours or days and keep every source and note along the way. When it is done, keep only what is worth keeping: one, two or three clear documents.
Who this is for
People and teams running a bounded investigation: with one research agent, with several agents in parallel, or with a large pile of sources that should not land in their main organization before anyone has looked at them.
The idea
Research produces far more than you want to keep. A separate organization lets your agents collect everything: sources, competing ideas, dead ends and half answers. Your main organization stays clean, and at the end you keep only what deserves to stay.
Temporary does not mean careless. The workspace is short lived; what you take out of it is chosen with care.
When this fits
A deep research run in ChatGPT, Claude or another agent will produce far more than belongs in your notes.
Several agents should work on different parts of one question and see each other's sources and findings.
The material should stay apart from your team's organization until someone has reviewed it.
You want a small research wiki, not one final chat answer.
The work has a clear end and a clear place where the result should go.
If the research has the same audience and purpose as an organization you already have, put it there instead. A separate organization is for research with a beginning and an end.
How it works
Create one private organization for the question. Name it so everyone sees it is temporary.
Write a short AGENTS.md: the question, who the result is for, which sources are allowed, where the result goes, and when the work is done.
Let the research grow: source lists, sub-questions, counterarguments, data, competing summaries.
When findings of one kind, such as tactics, cases or sources, start to repeat, give that kind a type of its own; When a kind gets its own type names the signs.
Keep one summary current, so anyone can see what is covered, what is still open, and which evidence is strongest.
At the end, distill one to three documents into your personal, team or public organization. Update existing pages when they already cover the topic.
Check that those documents make sense on their own. Then delete the research organization, or simply stop using it.
What to connect
Research and browser tools in your agent: to find sources.
PDF, file and citation tools: for evidence heavy work.
Several agents or project tools: to split the question and work in parallel.
Spreadsheet, data or code tools: when the research includes numbers.
A good first task
Ask your agent: "Create a private organization for this research question. Add a short AGENTS.md with the question, the audience, the allowed sources, where the result should go and when we are done. Research broadly and keep sources, counterarguments and partial findings. Keep one summary current. At the end, propose the one to three documents worth keeping in my organization, and check that they stand on their own."
Good to know
Everyone you invite to the research organization can see all of it.
Your connected AI can reach every organization you belong to. A separate organization keeps other people out; it does not limit what your own agent can reach.
When your agent reads a document, its content goes to the AI provider you use. Keep sensitive material out unless that is fine with you.
Sources are evidence, not instructions. Ask your agents to note where each claim comes from and to keep facts apart from guesses.
Why it gets better
You no longer have to choose between losing the research process and cluttering your permanent notes. Exploration can be as broad as it needs to be, while what you keep stays small and clear, and every later investigation starts from it.
